Poor old Johnnie Ray... He'd be a perfect fit for teen idol Friday but, as much as I enjoy his salacious and sad story, I can't stand the sound of his voice. So we'll give him a nod and take the 1986 cover of his biggest hit, "Cry", and appreciate the wonderful voice of Crystal Gayle and a beautiful arrangement by Bergen White.
If you're quick to dismiss the lady, as so many are, I point you toward the soundtrack to "One From The Heart" with Tom Waits and beg that you give "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" a fresh listen. If you still aren't convinced, you can always giggle at the thought of escalators licking their lips in anticipation as she sings, "So, let your hair down...".
